Cinema Rediscovered returns for seventh annual edition in July

By Robin Askew  Tuesday Feb 28, 2023

Cinema Rediscovered, the UK’s Bristol-based annual festival of classic cinema, returns to venues around the city from Wednesday 26 – Sunday 30 July. It then goes off on a UK tour from August-December.

The full programme of restorations, rediscoveries and rarities from around the world won’t be revealed until June, but it has been confirmed that this year’s festival will include a focus on the early British work of Bristol-born director J. Lee Thompson, who’s fondly remembered for the likes of The Guns of Navarone, Ice Cold in Alex and the original Cape Fear (and less fondly remembered for Death Wish 4: The Crackdown).

One of Thompson’s films that will definitely be screened at Cinema Rediscovered is the 1956 crime drama Yield to the Night, starring Diana Dors. Controversial in its day owing to the storyline’s coincidental similarity to the Ruth Ellis case, and the reported suicide of a 19-year-old girl after seeing the film, Yield to the Night was also credited with demonstrating that Dors was capable of far more than stereotypical ‘blonde bombshell’ roles and was nominated for the Palme d’Or at Cannes.
