So finally it was a macho action threequel that deposed Barbie after six weeks at the top of the chart. Denzel Washington vehicle The Equalizer 3 opened with a franchise-best £2.8m. Also doing well is the controversial, independently distributed thriller Sound of Freedom, starring The Passion of the Christ‘s Jim Caviezel, which has been embraced by the US Christian far-right and those crazy QAnon conspiracy theorists. Saturday’s National Cinema Day, during which tickets were discounted to £3, generated nearly £5m, with the chief beneficiaries being family flicks such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and Elemental, which both climbed back up the chart.
