‘To Be Continued’: a night of first-look performances at The Mount Without

By Sarski Anderson  Wednesday May 14, 2025

Alongside their own repertoire and a rich programme of work from invited choreographers and dance companies, Impermanence have a history of putting on vibrant, one-off showcase nights, most often at their adopted – and newly transformed – home of The Mount Without.

The latest of these is To Be Continued, which sees an eclectic range of guests sharing new work in front of an audience for the first time.

In Impermanence co-director Josh Ben-Tovim’s words, it’s about “sharing the spark before the fire has even caught.

“It’s a celebration of the in-between, that electric moment in early creation when anything is still possible.”

Fellow co-director Roseanna Anderson is equally enthusiastic about the unique opportunity these events afford audiences to gain an insight into the creative process. “It’s intimate, a little chaotic and completely alive”, she says.

So far, so unpredictable. Tonight’s participants in the “part open studio, part live rehearsal” event are showing ideas borne of a heady mix of disciplines.

Nicholas Denton

Set in a hotel room in Hanoi, Australian actor Nicholas Denton’s fascinating These things I adore is a heart-rending story of grief, and connections lost and found.

Former Bristol mayor, Cleo Lake presents a memorial folk dance to honour the history and legacy of the Transatlantic Trafficking in Enslaved Africans, rooted in African-centred traditions and community collaboration.

Experimental multidisciplinary artist Muti Musa joins the bill with a very nascent piece of work blending choreography and music, while Northern School of Contemporary Dance graduate Chevon Edwards brings a fascinating blend of dance, theatre and clowning to bear on The Tyranny of King Edward, “a darkly comic meditation on power, friendship and the surreal tyranny of root vegetables”.

As for work from Impermanence themselves, Anderson and Ben-Tovim’s Oh yeah that show is an “abstract collage of memories, false starts and false performances”. It might be “a first draft of something final”, they reflect, “or maybe just another beginning”.

Chevron Edwards

It’s been a long time coming, but thanks to a multi-year grant from the Jerwood Foundation, Impermanence are defying their name and beginning to cement a permanent home for Bristol’s dance scene at The Mount Without.

It’s imperative that the city’s dance fans – be they seasoned or emerging – continue to support it.
