Freddie Hayes: ‘It’s time for The Magic Lady to take the stage’
Freddie Hayes is an award-winning performer who makes shows rich in comedy, clowning and puppetry.
Directed by Sh!t Theatre, her wildly creative 2022 Doctor Faustus-inspired mash-up Potatohead saw her don a ‘spud suit’ as Charlotte the potato, fresh out of drama school with lofty dreams. It went on to win accolades including the Most Bizarre Moment in Theatre award that year.
Now, she is bringing her attention to the world of magic – an environment that was until recently dominated by ‘magic men’ (she notes The Magic Circle was a male-only club until 1991).

It’s time, she asserts, for The Magic Lady to take the stage.
After a hugely successful 2024 Edinburgh Fringe, Hayes is now on tour, and will be performing on consecutive nights at The Wardrobe Theatre in May.

She describes the eponymous character as “a chaotic showbiz loon and deluded illusionist”, with an energy akin to 80s cabaret icons such as Glenn Close and Cilla Black.
“After years as a glamorous assistant, she’s stepping into the spotlight to dazzle audiences with her brand of bizarre comedy and questionable magic. Houdini who?”
