Totterdown Centre transformed into ‘WonderLand’ book and gift shop

By Joe Melia  Thursday Nov 28, 2019

The Totterdown Centre on the Wells Road has been transformed into a pop-up bookshop, art gallery and gift shop named WonderLand.

WonderLand aims to offer the broadest selection of local titles in the city from publishers including Tangent Books and Bristol Books. There are also illustrated children’s books from Book Island, a full range of pamphlets from Bristol Radical History group and a selection of radical titles and vegan cookbooks from Bob’s Books from Bristol Anarchist Solidarity Easton.

The range of titles includes fiction and poetry from local authors, the Bristol Short Story Prize anthologies, as well as local history, street art, music, sport and more.

“It’s great seeing so many local books under one roof,” said Tangent Books publisher Richard Jones, one of the organisers of the pop-up. “It’s easily the best selection of local titles in town and a great showcase for Bristol publishing.”

WonderLand artists whose work is for sale include Brigitta Liegis, Jerry Ortmans, Laura Murray Carolyn Bunt and work from the collection of Jan and Garth O’Donnell, two of the founders of the Jamaica Street Studios.

The gift shop includes work by potters Sarah Jordan and Juliet Fleming Pottery plus Quint’s Candles; Easy Action Vinyl; Margaret May Soaps; Fanny Tingle Chutneys; Beast Socks and T-Shirts; Stokes Croft China; Sandra Moore Cards; Bristol Archive Records, Bristol Books; jewellery and other Bristol businesses.

“We will open Thursday to Friday for the first couple of weeks and then every day in the build-up to Christmas,” said Richard Jones.

“We’re also planning some evening events and a charity fundraising event. Wonderland aims to showcase the work of a selection of outstanding local artists alongside books, gifts and hand-made products.”

Wonderland pop-up bookshop, art gallery and gift shop is open until December 22. For more information, including opening hours, visit https://www.facebook.com/WonderLandBristol/
