Gloucester Road Books announce their first events of 2024

By Sarski Anderson  Wednesday Feb 7, 2024

Indie booksellers Gloucester Road Books have announced the first in their literary events for 2024.

Opening the programme for the year is the acclaimed author and senior university lecturer Manya Wilkinson, a Jewish New Yorker living in Newcastle.

On February 20, Wilkinson will be discussing her new novel, Lublin, which follows three young lads, Elya, Ziv and Kiva as they set off to the market town of the title.

Characterised as “Stand by Me in Tsarist Russia”, the book has garnered rave reviews from critics, fellow writers and readers alike.

A fortnight later, poet and writer Holly Pester will be visiting Gloucester Road Books on March 6 to talk about her debut novel, The Lodgers.

This much-anticipated book has been described by Nathalie Olah as “a novel for the age and for generation rent: a captivating and unforgettable account of how economic circumstance can lead to a feeling of being only half alive”.

And on March 11, it is the turn of multi-award-winning Franco-Korean writer Elisa Shua Dusapin, whose evocative prose has been compared to Deborah Levy, and has been translated into six languages.

At Gloucester Road Books, Dusapin will be in conversation about her third novel, Vladivostok Circus, translated by Aneesa Abbas Higgins.

Gloucester Road Books presents: Manya Wilkinson: Lublin on February 20, Holly Pester: The Lodgers on March 6 and Elisa Shua Dusapin: Vladivostok Circus on March 11; all three events are at 7pm, at the book shop. Full details and ticket availability for all literary events at Gloucester Road Books can be found at www.gloucesterroadbooks.com.
