Bristol children write book on climate change
One hundred and twenty school pupils have been busy writing a book about the one of the biggest issues facing our world today.
No More Baby Sharks is a collection of drawings and words from the young minds of Ashley Down and Ashton Gate afterschool clubs, raising awareness about the biggest threat to their futures.
The book’s goal was to reflect Bristol children’s hope and concern regarding the future of their planet, according to Melanie Ruth, community artist, play leader and author.
It contains more than 100 drawings and messages in response to climate change and extinction.

No More Baby Sharks is backed by broadcaster, biologist, natural historian and author Sir David Attenborough who sent a message of support to the children and advised the best ways to mitigate climate change.
It coincides with an upcoming exhibition at the M Shed called Think Global: Act Bristol, set to begin on October 30.
Speaking about the book signing, Ruth said: “They were thrilled and so excited to see their work in a published book. The look on their faces when I showed them the finished book has been the hi-light of the whole project. I will continue to encourage the children to connect to nature and protect the world around them.”
She added: “Their messages are poignant, direct, and wonderfully illustrated. They are an inspiration to work with and all have something to say about what’s happening to the planet we all share and how we can help.’’
It is hoped that the book will launch a new understanding for how children are taught to enjoy and care for their planet.

No More Baby Sharks is being printed by Taylor Bros Printers, who are based in St Anne’s, on recycled paper and with vegetable ink.
Richard Jones, from the publisher, said: “As soon as I saw the children’s drawings, I realised they were an important contribution to the climate crisis debate and deserved to be put in front of as wide an audience as possible. There is so much hope for the future in the children’s work. It is truly inspiring.”
