First look at Bristol’s Van Gogh immersive exhibition

By Betty Woolerton  Friday Apr 8, 2022

Swirling galaxies, pulsating fields and blooming flowers are some of the breathtaking sights to behold at Propyard’s latest exhibition.

Opening to the public on Saturday, Van Gogh’s post-impressionist artworks are resurrected in a mystical reimagining of more than 300 pieces.

Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience will be exhibited for the next five months, and see the walls and ceilings of Propyard in St Philip’s transformed by projections of the Dutch artist’s sweeping brushstrokes – all made possible by virtual mapping technology.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

Framed paintings, white walls and silence – the experience of many art galleries – has been truly turned on its head, as every inch of the space has been flooded with light and colour and classical murmurations played overhead.

Visitors are invited to sit down and be engulfed within the post-impressionist’s artwork

Van Gogh: The Immersive experience is the work of a partnership between Exhibition Hub and “entertainment discovery platform” Fever – who have toured it around to the world from Belgium and China to York and New York.

Now it has officially landed in Bristol, visitors have the chance to take a journey through Van Gogh’s paintings and his explore life, work and secrets.

The former Ministry of Defense torpedo testing factory, Propyard, has been repurposed to host the exhibition, which premiered in Naples in 2017, and runs from spring until autumn.

The exhibition also includes a separate virtual reality experience where visitors can explore “a day in the life of the artist” – chronicling the secrets and inspiration behind works including Vincent’s Bedroom at Arles, and Starry Night Over The Rhone River.

Accompanying the main exhibition is a city art trail leading from Temple Meads to Feeder Road – with murals inspired by Sunflowers to spot.

Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience runs until September 7.
