Thousands stand up for EU in Bristol

By Louis Emanuel  Wednesday Jun 29, 2016

More than 2,000 people braved the rain to stand up for the EU and denounce the rise in hate crimes in Bristol since last Friday’s Brexit vote.

The rally took place on College Green as a smaller pro-Corbyn march brought traffic to a standstill just yards away in the city centre.

Placards saying “fromage not Farage” were raised high amid a sea of colour and European flags.

City mayor Marvin Rees addresses the crowds and reiterated his vision to take Bristol forward as a global city despite the referendum result.

The demonstration came after Bristol24/7 revealed the rise in hate crimes alleged to have been connected to the out vote.

Crowds also called for respect towards migrants and refugees with “refugees welcome” placards among the demonstration.

It was the second consecutive pro-EU protest since the referendum where 61 per cent of people in Bristol voted in favour of remaining in the EU.
