Harbourside jigsaw to be completed

By Laura Collacott  Monday Apr 18, 2016

The last piece of undeveloped land on northern side of the Floating Harbour has been sold as the area’s redevelopment continues.

Formerly Canon’s Marsh Gasworks, the land been bought by developer Square Bay, which is now working on a planning application for a primarily residential scheme.

The 0.4 hectare site sits between Anchor Road and the Floating Harbour, close to the thriving Harbour Inlet, and has remained empty for 40 years, with land decontamination works contributing to the struggle to find a buyer.

The Soil Association intended to redevelop the former gas works site as their new headquarters

The site incorporates the former West Purifier House and Engine House – two Grade II listed buildings

Square Bay’s director Tom Vaughan-Jones said: “We are very pleased to have purchased the Purifier site. It is an incredibly important, prominent site and is the final piece of the jigsaw for the harbour side. It will be great to see the site developed and the listed buildings brought back into use.”

James Petherick, associate at Bilfinger GVA who represented the vendor in the sale, said: “This remarkable site is one of the final undeveloped parcels on Bristol’s Harbourside which, despite best efforts by the former land owner, has remained vacant for many years. I am sure that Square Bay’s exciting development proposals will soon see high quality development of this site with breath-taking views of Brunel’s ss Great Britain.”
