‘This feels like a bittersweet victory’
A Bristol law firm has recently secured a multi-million pound injury settlement which was also its highest ever settlement.
Huw Ponting and Sue Stoll of Enable Law, a specialist firm in personal injury, mental capacity, and medical negligence, have secured a £27.4m settlement for a client who sustained life-changing brain injuries after being struck by a car.
The solicitors achieved this record compensation after rejecting much lower offers from the defendant’s insurers. They initially turned down offers of £1.5m and £10m to ensure the client’s future needs were fully met.
Ponting, head of Enable Law’s personal injury team, and Stoll, a senior solicitor specialising in brain injuries, led the case, which left them with mixed emotions after securing the settlement.

“This feels like a bittersweet victory,” said Ponting. “Our hearts go out to our client because her life has been shattered, which is incredibly sad, but her plight motivated us to fight for her. It is gratifying that the trust placed in Enable Law to ensure she wants for nothing has been vindicated.”
“For Enable Law to secure such a settlement for a client with no catastrophic physical injuries, but life-changing cognitive ones, is unprecedented. Most importantly, it ensures a framework for our client to live as well as she can for the rest of her life.”
Enable Law took over the case after the intervention of the client’s case manager, who had been supporting the family.
The client remains under a strict anonymity order to protect her identity and future welfare.
Stoll said: “Through no fault of her own, our client’s life was devastated by the brain injury caused by a motorist’s carelessness. No amount of money will ever make up for the impact, but this settlement ensures her financial security for lifetime care and rehabilitation, enabling her to maximise her independence.”
The £27.4 million settlement was based on expert evidence from specialists in various fields, including neurological rehabilitation, neuropsychology, physiotherapy, and assistive technology.
Ponting added: “Our clients’ welfare is central to everything we do. Our brain injury team, supported by in-house mental capacity and education lawyers, is well-placed to assist clients with complex needs. We’re proud to have secured Enable Law’s highest ever personal injury settlement, following our determination to meet all of our client’s future needs.”
“This case proves that not all solicitors are the same. If clients are unhappy with their lawyers, they can and should change legal representation to secure the best outcome for their specific circumstances,” concluded Ponting.
