National law firm to expand footprint in South West with key appointment

By Milan Perera  Monday Sep 15, 2025

Shakespeare Martineau has strengthened its presence in South West by appointing David Smithen as a partner in its Bristol team, based at Temple Quay.

With over 30 years of experience under his belt in residential and commercial development, strategic land and mixed-use projects, Smithen has previously worked at some leading law firms such as TLT, Eversheds, Pinsent Masons, Arthur Andersen and Gateley.

He advises national and regional developers, landowners and investors on complex, high-value transactions.

In his new role, Smithen will help expand the firm’s client base and support growth across residential and commercial development.

His recent projects include multi-million-pound land deals, mixed-use schemes and financing arrangements for care home portfolios and NHS facilities.

Smithen said: “Shakespeare Martineau has a well-earned reputation as a national specialist in development law, with the ambition, scale and strength-in-depth to support clients on major schemes. The firm’s energy and drive really stood out to me, and I saw an exciting opportunity to help grow its presence in the South West.

“Real estate development is a complex and demanding area of law – but one that’s incredibly rewarding. I enjoy problem-solving and delivering practical, commercially-focused results that help bring transformational developments to life.”

Victoria Tester, managing director, highlighted that Smithen’s expertise strengthens the firm’s development team.

“David’s track record and depth of experience in the development market makes him an excellent addition to our team. His arrival reinforces our commitment to growth in the South West and our focus on supporting clients involved in high-impact, strategically important developments. We’re thrilled to welcome him to the firm.”

The full-service firm, which was founded in Midlands, currently boasts of a 1,200-strong team across its offices.
