Is AI Replacing Outsourcing or Creating New Opportunities
Outsourcing has been one of the biggest tools in a business’s arsenal for generations. If a company wants to reduce overhead costs without compromising the services it provides, the best solution is to outsource to another company or a small team of talented freelancers. There’s never been a question as to whether or not outsourcing would ever cease to be beneficial for businesses, but has the impact of AI made a difference to this?
Many businesses are now worried that AI is replacing traditional outsourcing and causing problems for everyone involved. The companies that usually outsource their services are concerned that this could put them out of business. Meanwhile, the businesses that typically pay for outsourcing raise fears about the quality of outsourced AI work. It’s becoming a fiery topic throughout all industries – though is there actually anything to worry about?
Is AI truly going to replace outsourcing, or is this the beginning of new opportunities for businesses?
AI Set To Transform Outsourcing, Not Replace It
When consulting with industry experts or looking through platforms like BPO News, the consensus is that artificial intelligence isn’t actually aiming to replace outsourcing as we know it. Instead, all the evidence points towards AI as a transformative tool in this particular sector. It may change the way in which businesses interact with outsourced providers – and it may also alter how outsourcing companies offer their services to clients.
The Removal Of Repetitive Tasks
If the general idea is that AI won’t be used to fully replace all outsourcing services, why have so many people and businesses been worried about it? Part of this is down to the general fear of AI – studies show that 69% of workers are worried about the economic impact of AI job losses right now, and this figure is likely even higher in certain industries.
Furthermore, this type of panic tends to begin when AI does indeed take a few jobs, and that has happened in some very niche areas of outsourcing. You see, the main focus of AI in the outsourcing world is to remove some of the more repetitive tasks that are currently done by humans but could easily be handled by artificial intelligence.
Examples include:
- Communicating with customers through chatbots
- Processing or creating invoices
- Taking data from customer forms
- Drafting email templates
It’s the tasks that most businesses have to deal with, but AI can now take over to reduce the need for individual employees to perform these tasks. From a business standpoint, this saves money because there’s no need to hire someone to do repetitive daily tasks like these – nor will they need to outsource.
When you look at this in isolation, it’s easy to jump to the conclusion that AI is stealing jobs and work away from outsourcing, and this will change things forever. In reality, repetitive tasks like these make up a small fraction of what most companies outsource – and the majority of businesses probably wouldn’t have outsourced this work alone in the past.
The Constant Need For Human Expertise
The reason businesses shouldn’t fret too much about AI and outsourcing is that there will always be a constant need for human expertise in so many aspects of business operations. AI is only really “good” at one core thing: performing complex tasks faster than the human brain can comprehend. It is terrible at anything that involves human emotion or our capacity for judgment – particularly in relating to high-level business decision-making.
In turn, this means that humans will always be necessary for:
- Providing genuine customer service and empathising with people
- Handling more complicated business problems that you can’t solve with an algorithm
- Building actual long-term relationships with customers
- Making contextual decisions
It is incredibly unlikely that a business could turn to ChatGPT or Gemini and get it to provide the same level of service as it would from an outsourcing provider for several things. Customer service is the best example – yes, you can use an AI platform to provide chatbot services, but what if the customer has a complicated issue or there are emotions and ethics involved? Maybe a customer missed a payment for a business’s subscription services because they’ve had a family emergency. An AI chatbot wouldn’t be able to help the customer in that situation or provide guidance, but a human being could listen to them, take their situation into account, and provide a solution that suits both parties.
There are simply too many mistakes and inconsistencies in AI that make it a bad idea to replace outsourcing completely. Businesses need human creativity and empathy in order to provide the best all-around service, and this means that traditional outsourcing will still be necessary.
AI-Assisted Outsourcing Is The Future
Perhaps the most interesting part of this discussion revolves around how outsourcing providers utilise AI tools. Rather than shying away from artificial intelligence and being worried about it taking over, many providers have started to use it to their advantage as a way of opening up new opportunities.
Because AI can automate really well, outsourcing providers are able to provide even more services to business customers. They can implement AI tools and platforms as part of their overall package – going back to the customer service example, an outsourcer could offer a traditional outsourced customer service team along with a purpose-built chatbot for their client’s websites.
It’s all about getting the best of both worlds from this situation: use what AI is good at to enhance your traditional outsourced services, and this can invite more clients and make things better for businesses.
In conclusion, AI is not replacing outsourcing right now, and it probably never will, purely because human beings are too valuable to businesses. A company can never be run by a single computer; it needs empathy and creativity to thrive. So, as long as businesses still need ways to save money, outsourcing will be safe. The only change is that repetitive tasks are now sped up by AI, and outsourcing providers are going to start using it to better their services.
