Originally a low-budget monochrome oater entitled The Reno Brothers, this 1956 western was totally rejigged after third-billed Elvis Presley became a pop sensation. Songs were added, Elvis’s role was beefed up, the title was changed to that of his ballad, and even the ending was altered to include a ghostly coda after preview audiences reacted poorly to their gyrating hero’s fate. As a result, the film made back its entire budget on its opening weekend.
Apart from its historical significance, this is actually pretty boilerplate stuff about three Confederate brothers who pilfer a Union payroll and carve it up on the family farm. Elvis is the younger fourth brother who marries an older sibling’s girl, which is considered rather poor form.
