Bigoted, racist ex-con Robert Ryan reluctantly teams up with black jazz musician Harry Belafonte to pull a bank robbery in upstate New York masterminded by bitter former cop Ed Begley in Robert Wise‘s corking heist flick. Watch out too for Shelley Winters as Ryan’s wife and and Gloria Grahame as his mistress. Executive produced by Belafonte and superbly shot on location, this is one of the last great films of the classic noir era.
It’s back on screen as part of both the Cube’s October/November noir season the Festival of the Future City film programme.
