The Man Who Fell to Earth

Director
Nic Roeg
Certificate
18
Running Time
139 mins

Pallid, English-accented space alien David Bowie pitches up in New Mexico on the hunt for water for his dying planet. His knowledge of life on Earth gleaned solely from television broadcasts, he joins forces with patent attorney Oliver Farnsworth (Buck Henry) and uses advanced technology to build up an enormous business empire. But Earth soon gets under his alien skin, notably in the comely form of Mary-Lou (Candy Clark).

Nic Roeg’s superb adaptation of Walter Tevis’s novel emphasises the strangeness of America to an outsider and benefits from Bowie’s finest screen performance. It’s now been given the full 4K restoration treatment and is back on screenin the Everyman’s late night classics series.
