A properly ‘woke’ surreal science fiction comedy, Oakland rapper Boots Riley‘s directorial debut is mercifully no tedious, opportunistic zeitgeist-surfer and has been picking up serious acclaim in the US. If you enjoyed Get Out, Dear White People or Mike Judge’s under-appreciated Idiocracy, dive right in – but be prepared for a wild trip of a ride.
Impecunious Cassius ‘Cash’ Green (Lakeith Stanfield, whom you may remember as ultra-white black man Logan King in Get Out) lives in his uncle’s garage with his girlfriend Detroit (Tessa Thompson). He works as a telemarketeer, proving rather unsuccessful until a co-worker (Danny Glover, for it is he) gives him a tip: use your ‘white voice’ on the phone. Cassius tries out this strategy and it proves so successful that he’s swiftly rolling in loot as he ascends the corporate ladder. So far, so satirical. Think you know where this is going? Think again, as Riley pulls the rug from under our feet with a hugely entertaining detour into Charlie Kaufman territory, in which Armie Hammer is let off the leash as a cokehead tycoon determined to increase productivity by experimenting with horse DNA.
The Cube’s free screening on February 16 is part of the RADMIN Festival of Administration. Go here for further information and ticket details.
