After that dreadful flop Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, Ang Lee dips a toe into science fiction with this long-gestating project which was conceived way back in 1997.
Everyone from Harrison Ford to Sean Connery has been attached to star along the way, but one of the reasons why it never got made was that CGI technology wasn’t sufficiently advanced. So now Will Smith stars alongside the digitally altered younger Will Smith as a government assassin targeted by a younger clone of himself who, naturally, is able to anticipate all his moves. Unfortunately, in the intervening period Scorsese’s The Irishman has stolen all the headlines with its digital de-aging of Robert De Niro and in 2012 Looper turned up with a similar plot, albeit with a time travel twist
