The Earth’s fucked, so everyone’s scarpering to Mars. Trouble is that a violent collision with space debris leaves their vessel, the Ariana, adrift in space with no means of returning or reaching its desitnation. Even all the onboard luxury of malls, restaurants and high-tech VR immersions in good old Earth as it used to be can’t keep depression and anxiety at bay, as everyone sails off into the void . . .

Based on an epic poem by Nobel Prize-winner Harry Martinson – which was actually written during the Cold War, but has been repurposed for the era of Climate Change – this solemn, Tarkovsky-esque Swedish science fiction flick is heavy on the existentialism rather than actual drama, being more Solaris than WALL-E.
