What Men Want

Director
Adam Shankman
Certificate
15
Running Time
117 mins

Remember Nancy Meyers’ What Women Want from 18 years ago? Allow me to refresh your memory: that was the one in which pre-disgrace Mel Gibson acquired the ability to hear women’s thoughts after being electrocuted by a hairdryer. Here’s the gender-flipped version, which is directed by a bloke (Adam Shankman) rather than a woman but features a largely African-American cast. Figure out for yourself whether or not this qualifies as progress.

Anyhoo, Taraji P. Henson, who previously battled sexism in Hidden Figures, steals it as a sports agent (with the obligatory gay sidekick) who struggles to get ahead in this male-dominated world until – you guessed it – a bump on the head permits her to hear men’s thoughts.
