The Last Letter From Your Lover

Director
Augustine Frizzell
Certificate
12A
Running Time
109 mins

In the present day, romance-dodging thirtysomething journalist Felicity Jones is working on a profile when she discovers a passionate love letter from someone named ‘Boot’ begging ‘J’ to run away with her. Intrigued, she enlists kindly archivist Nabhaan Rizwan to help uncover more of the story. Back in 1965, we find Shailene Woodley, the wife of a wealthy industrialist, having an illicit affair with Callum Turner – the financial journalist assigned to cover him. Needless to say, the two stories intertwine and a predictable course is taken.

The film is adapted from the novel of the same title by Jojo Moyes, whose deathbed romance weepie Me Before You became an unexpected box office hit in 2016. Romance enthusiasts should lap it up, but hard-bitten hacks have been less easily convinced. The Guardian‘s reviewer reckoned it “toggles between two love stories and shortchanges both”.
