Totterdown’s recently revived Old Picture House plays host to this evening of film clips and live music celebrating 100 years of jazz on screen, presented and performed by Dave Merrick and Natalie Davis.
Expect to see Billie Holiday at age 19 in Symphony in Black (1935) and the only extant footage of Bessie Smith in St Louis Blues (1929). There will also be film of Cab Calloway from the 1940s, Nina Simone from the 1960s, and clips from Bessie (pictured) – HBO’s Emmy award-winning biopic of Bessie Smith with Queen Latifah in the title role.
