Rejoice! It’s the zombie comedy that even succeeded in underwhelming uber-cool director Jim Jarmusch‘s ever-dwindling band of champions when it opened this year’s Cannes film festival. His cachet is such that he can still attract a great cast – Adam Driver, Bill Murray, Selena Gomez, Chloe Sevigny, Tilda Swinton, etc – but the consensus seems to be that he coasts on tiresome self-satisfaction and knowing self-awareness.
As one reviewer put it: “Jarmusch has opted for a stumbling dead so indulgently pleased with itself that it resembles little more than a precocious home movie filled with familiar faces, all of whom find the joke funnier than any audience will.”
