The original 1989 adaptation of Stephen King‘s 1983 novel was no masterpiece, but it achieved the double whammy of being agreeably nasty (it still has an 18 certificate in the UK, when most mainstream horrors go for a 15 or even a 12A) and becoming a huge box office hit. It also boasted the distinction of being directed by a woman (Mary Harron).
This remake is directed by two blokes – but hey, that’s progress. The plot remains much the same, with a grieving father (Jason Clarke) teaming up with a weird old coot (John Lithgow) in the hope of resurrecting his deceased son in a mysterious Indian burial ground. Needless to say, this does not go entirely according to plan.
