Rosanna Arquette goes full Doris Stokes as spiritualist Martha Travis, who specialises in reassuring the recently bereaved that their goner relatives are in a happy place. But then she gets the genuine ‘gift’ of prophecy, becoming a disembodied witness to a brutal slaying. But convincing sceptics of this claim proves something of a challenge. Frequently cited as Bristol-born Mike Hodges‘ best film since Get Carter, this supernatural thriller received only a minimal UK release back in 1989 thanks to the financial woes of its distributor, Palace Pictures.
