There’s an awful lot riding on this for Pixar. Widely agreed to be the best film in the series, 2010’s Toy Story 3 was nominated for both the Best Animated Feature (which it won) and Best Picture Academy Awards and became the first animated film to take more than £1 billion at the global box office. Following that has clearly been something of a challenge. Release dates have come and gone (Toy Story 4 was originally due out in June 2017), creator John Lasseter departed, and the script was reworked several times. So now here it is, marking the directorial debut of Inside Out co-writer Josh Cooley.
All the old crew are back for a tale that reintroduces Bo Peep (Annie Potts), who was absent from Toy Story 3, as a love interest for Tom Hanks‘s Woody. There’s also a new character in the form of Forky (Tony Hale). Fashioned by the gang’s new owner Bonnie, he’s a “sentient spork” who suffers an existential crisis about being a toy.
