Danny DeVito’s inspiring kids’ movie is as much a satirical look at the crass philistinism of modern, TV-dominated American family life as it is an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s story about an extraordinarily gifted girl who escapes from her deeply stupid, lazy parents (DeVito and Rhea Perlman) only to fall into the clutches of monstrous, tyrannical headmistress Pam Ferris.
The kind of fantastical film that can just as easily be enjoyed by adults as children, this addresses serious issues in a light-hearted, imaginative way. As with his previous films, DeVito’s direction is both ingenious and fun, making the most of a finely balanced script and drawing the best from all concerned, especially Mara Wilson as the radiant Matilda. Serious without being glum and funny without being dumb, Matilda is a delight.
