Hottie Leonora falls for hunky South American nobleman Don Alvaro. But this is opera, so her old man the Marquis of Calatrava forbids their union. Naturally, the lovers decide to elope. But – have I mentioned this already? – this is opera, so the Marquis catches up with them. Whoops! Don Alvaro manages to kill the old bugger during their altercation and he curses his daughter as he perishes. Enter Leonora’s brother Don Carlo di Vargas, bent on vengeance. Preposterous coincidences and tragedy ensue.
Christof Loy‘s new production of Verdi’s epic opera boasts a suitably star-studded cast, including Anna Netrebko, Jonas Kaufmann and Ludovic Tézier, conducted by Antonio Pappano. It’s broadcast live to cinemas from the Royal Opera House on April 2, with encore screenings to follow.
