Resourceful Leonore (Lise Davidsen) disguises herself as a fella – the eponymous Fidelio – in order to gain access to a jail where her hubby Florestan (Jonas Kaufmann) is being held as a political prisoner.

Beethoven’s only opera was inspired by a real incident during the French Revolution. Conducted by Antonio Pappano this new production is broadcast live to cinemas on March 17, with encore screenings to follow.
