Royal Opera House Encore: Faust

Certificate
12A
Running Time
225 mins

You know the one: Dr. Faust comes something of a cropper after being tempted by the demon Méphistophélès . Back in the 19th century, Charles-Francois Gounod‘s opera in five acts was the most popular version of Goethe’s cautionary yarn.

Back in 2004, David McVicar‘s innovative production gave the opera a new lease of life by setting it against the backdrop of the French capital’s dark underbelly in the years leading up to the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. Michael Fabiano stars as Faust, with Diana Damrau as his beloved Marguerite and Erwin Schrott as the diabolical Méphistophélès in this latest staging. It’s broadcast live on April 30, with encore screenings to follow.
