Reviews have been generally positive, though some critics commented that director Stanley Nelson‘s dry, traditional, cradle-to-grave talking head approach is somewhat at odds with the creativity of the artist whose life he documents. It’s back on screen as part of the Bristol International Jazz and Blues Festival 2020.
