Replacing the injured Bryn Terfel, Evgeny Nikitin sings the role of the tormented Dutchman, condemned to roam the seas for eternity, with Anja Kampe as the devoted Senta, whose love can set him free. The themes of damnation and redemption were to preoccupy Wagner for much of his career.

François Girard‘s new production for the Met boasts sweeping sets by John Macfarlane, turning the stage into a rich, layered tableau reminiscent of a vast oil painting.
