A feelgood disability comedy-drama which at least doesn’t commit the modern-day faux pas of having an A-lister pretending to be disabled in pursuit of Oscar glory, this Huck Finn-esque buddy flick from first-time writer-directors Tyler Nilson and Mike Schwartz casts Shia LaBeouf opposite Zack Gottsagen – an actor and activist with Down syndrome.
Gottsagen plays Zak, a 22-year-old escapee from a nursing home who dreams of becoming a pro wrestler. Instead, he finds an unlikely travelling companion in the form of a smalltime outlaw named Tyler (LaBeouf) and the odd couple embark on a series of adventures in the rural Deep South. Reviews have been generally positive, the consensus being that the film successfully avoids most of the genre’s many syrupy pitfalls.
