The Current War

Director
Alfonso Gomez-Rejon
Certificate
12A
Running Time
108 mins

The final victim of the curious modern convention that deems any project produced by Harvey Weinstein to be morally repellent, this stylised historical drama about the battle to bring electric power to America had the misfortune to be premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival back in 2017, just weeks before those sexual abuse allegations emerged. It was then unceremoniously pulled from release and languished in limbo until now.

Festival reviews were mixed, but behind the punning title is the fascinating tale of bitter rivalry between great inventors Thomas Edison (Benedict Cumberbatch), who favoured direct current, and George Westinghouse (a whiskery Michael Shannon), who preferred to light up the US with the more dangerous alternating current. Watch out for Nicholas Hoult as Nikola Tesla and Bristol’s very own Tuppence Middleton as Edison’s wife Mary.
