Still working their way through the social ishoos checklist, Ken Loach and his long-time screenwriting collaborator Paul Laverty follow I, Daniel Blake‘s assault on the iniquities of the welfare system by skewering the cynical ’empowerment’ bullshit of zero-hours contracts as they focus on the exploitation of a couple dragged down by debt.

Ricky (Kris Hitchen) is a classic Loach salt-of-the-earth character: a proud working class bloke who’s never been on the dole and simply wants to put in some honest graft to support his family. After losing his construction job in the financial crash of 2008, he joins his care worker wife Abby (Debbie Honeywood) in the brave new world of the gig economy as a delivery driver who is nominally self-employed but has no rights or control over his working hours, is obliged to navigate a fiendishly complex system to hire his van, and finds himself subject to cruel ‘sanctions’ for taking the occasional piss break, leading to further indebtedness. Sorry We Missed You was widely acclaimed as being among Loach’s best work when it was unveiled at Cannes.

The preview screening will be followed by a satellite Q&A with director Ken Loach.
