After the death of the father who abandoned them, the three twentysomething Koda sisters (Sachi, Yoshino and Chika) have a surprise in store at his funeral when the meet the younger half-sister they didn’t know they had. So they decide to adopt the teenage Suzu, who proves to have a more complex identity than they anticipated. Like Father, Like Son and I Wish director Hirokazu Kore-eda‘s unhurried and perceptive family drama was shot on location in the beach town of Kamkura. Perhaps inevitably, comparisons have been drawn with the work of the great Japanese master Yasujiro Ozu.
It’s back on screen in the Watershed’s comprehensive Of Flesh & Blood: The Cinema of Hirokazu Kore-eda season.
