Gavin Hood returns to Eye in the Sky territory with the true story of whistleblower Katharine Gun (Keira Knightley). A translator working at GCHQ in 2003, just as Tony Blair is itching to join his US chums in bombing the crap out of Iraq, Gun receives an explosive memo from the NSA instructing her to gather compromising material on members of the UN Security Council, in order to blackmail them into voting in favour of an illegal war.
Despite Gun’s undoubted bravery and the film’s solid supporting cast of Brit thesps (Matt Smith, Matthew Goode, Rhys Ifans, Ralph Fiennes, Kenneth Cranham), Official Secrets received decidedly mixed reviews when it was unveiled at the Sundance Festival, with the terms ‘solid’, ‘plodding’ and ‘well-intentioned’ being much in evidence.
