Desperate for work, Julia Ross (Nina Foch) take a job as live-in secretary to wealthy widow Mrs Hughes (Dame May Witty, cast against type in the villianess role). But when she shows up at her new employer’s isolated mansion on the coast of Hollywood Cornwall, Julia is alarmed to find herself imprisoned and forced to adopt a new identity as the wife of Mrs. Hughes’s sinister, murderous son Ralph (George Macready).
Despite its lack of a big-name cast, this Hitchcockian gothic mystery bagged some rave reviews in its time and was a clear influence on the likes of Vertigo and De Palma’s Obsession.
