After playing JMW Turner in Mike Leigh’s biopic, Timothy Spall gets daubing again as a very different painter. This time he’s L.S. Lowry – of ‘matchstick men and matchstick cats and dogs’ fame – who lives with his monstrous, domineering, disapproving, bedridden frightful old boot of a mother (Vanessa Redgrave) in 1920s Salford.
It’s adapted by Martyn Hesford from his stage play of the same title and directed by former RSC supremo Adrian Noble.
