Lords of Chaos

Director
Jonas Åkerlund
Certificate
18
Running Time
117 mins

As the world’s only mainstream film director who used to play drums in a black metal band, Jonas Åkerlund seemed the perfect choice to bring this loose adaptation of Lords of Chaos: The Bloody Rise of the Satanic Metal Underground to the screen.

Alas, while his version of the story of early ’90s Norwegian church burners Mayhem has all the expected plot points – murder, suicide, cannibalism, etc – it’s been accused of tonal awkwardness and doing for black metal what Bohemian Rhapsody did for Queen. Still, if you’ve ever wanted to see what Rory Culkin looks like in a wig and corpse paint, dive right in.
