In the wake of Film Stars Don’t Don’t in Liverpool and Stan & Ollie, the drama in which a fading Hollywood bigshot endures a melancholic twilight years visit to grim old Blighty has become a mini-genre all of its own. Bridget Jones herself – crinkly-eyed Renée Zellweger, for it is she – is on fine form as Judy Garland in this adaptation of Peter Quilter‘s stage play End of the Rainbow.
As that title implies, we are indeed a long way from Kansas. More precisely, we’re in the West End in 1969, where ailing Ms. Garland has pitched up for a shambolic, pill’n’booze-driven five-week sell-out run at the Talk of the Town nightclub because, well, she desperately needs the loot. All the mandatory heart-warming moments are present and correct, but if you know anything about the gay icon’s life you won’t need Mr. Wikipedia to tell you the ending.
