Asghar Farhadi, Oscar winning Iranian director of A Separation and The Salesman, goes mainstream with this psychological thriller that opened last year’s Cannes film festival.
Working in Spanish for the first time, he casts Penelope Cruz as Laura, who leaves her hubby behind to travel with their children from Argentina to a wedding just outside Madrid. Here she meets old flame Javier Bardem and – gasp! – promptly disappears. Reviews of this one were decidedly mixed, with some finding it all rather soapy and overly melodramatic despite strong performances from its top-notch cast.
