Hirokazu Kore-eda’s 2001 film was inspired by the Japanese Aum Supreme Truth cult. Three years after a cult commits mass suicide in the wake of a biological terrorist attack on the nation’s water supply that killed 128 people, four relatives of the dead journey to the scene of the tragedy, where they meet a surviving former sect member.
It’s back on screen in Watershed’s comprehensive Of Flesh & Blood: The Cinema of Hirokazu Kore-eda season.
