Sam Taylor-Johnson directs her hubby Aaron Taylor-Johnson in this detox drama based on the controversial ‘memoir’ of the same title by James Frey, large parts of which were found to be fabricated. The publisher later rebranded it as a ‘semi-fictional novel’.
If you fancy a good wallow, all your favourite addiction and recovery clichés are present and correct, though reviewers have not been kind. This is “just another gruelling yet mechanical round of self-destructive degradation followed by begrudging accountability and cleansed deliverance that has little to add to the crowded field of addiction dramas,” groaned the Hollywood Reporter.
