You know the story: former soldier Chelsea Manning uploaded vast quantities of classified documents and video to Julian Assange’s WikiLeaks website in 2010. After she was arrested, she came out as a trans woman and was sentenced to serve 35 years in an all-male military prison.
Multimedia artist Tim Travers Hawkins sets out to tell the complex story of this ambiguous figure in the graphics-heavy style of CitizenFour (whose director Laura Poitras serves as executive producer here), but is more than a little hampered by the fact that this is a story that has yet to reach a conclusion. The director will be present for a Q&A after the Watershed’s 3:40pm screening on Sunday 26 May.
