The last film by feminist filmmaker, grandmother of the French nouvelle vague and officially the oldest director (at 90) to be nominated for a competitive Oscar, Agnès Varda’s Varda by Agnès is both a sequel-of-sorts to 2008’s The Beaches of Agnès and an apt swansong as it looks back at her distinguished six-decades-plus career.
It’s based on a series of playful lectures she gave in her final years and includes all the digressions and surrealism we’ve come to expect. Watch out for Agnes dressed as a potato and building a floral tomb for her deceased pussycat (not simultaneously).
