Back in 1943, Oscar-winning Ben-Hur and Roman Holiday director William Wyler travelled to Europe to cover the Air War in progress. He flew actual combat missions with B-17 pilots from the US 8th Air Force. One of his three cinematographers was killed during filming.
Incredibly, all of the raw colour footage Wyler shot for his documentary The Memphis Belle: A Story of a Flying Fortress was recently discovered deep in the vaults of the US National Archives, This new film has been constructed out of the restored material.
