The voice of Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes (Don’t Leave Me This Way, If You Don’t Know Me By Now, Wake Up Everybody), Teddy Pendergrass went on to make history as the first African-American R&B artist to release four consecutive platinum albums. A near-fatal 1982 car accident left him a quadriplegic, but he returned to the stage three years later at Live Aid.
Needless to say, there’s a biopic in the works. But first this BBC Storyville documentary tells his extraordinary story. Director Olivia Lichtenstein will be present for a Q&A after the Watershed’s February 28 screening.
