Marianne and Leonard: Words of Love

Director
Nick Broomfield
Certificate
12A
Running Time
102 mins

That’s Marianne Ihlen and Leonard Cohen, fact fans. Nick Broomfield‘s follow-up to Whitney: Can I Be Me is another doc taking a peek behind the music biz curtain, this time focusing on the free love-era romance between the angsty misery-monger and the Norwegian divorcee.

They met in 1960, while Cohen was still trying to be a poet, and remained in contact until they died three months apart in 2016. Lest you crave a portrait of an enduring lifelong romance, it’s perhaps worth pointing out that despite his reputation as the introspective Patron Saint of Sensitive Bedsitter Blubbers, Cohen was a tireless shagger with enough notches on his bedpost to rival the most hedonistic rocker. “It’s hard not to see his behaviour as caddish, no matter how he intellectualised it,” sniffed Variety of Cohen’s vigorous swordsmanship.
