You may think you know what to expect from a comedy set in a Hooters-style ‘breastaurant’ named Double Whammies. But mumblecore king Andrew Bujalski‘s Support the Girls tackles serious themes – racism, sexism, etc – without hectoring or reneging on its promise to make us laugh.
Oscar winning If Beale Street Could Talk star Regina Hall is on top form as Lisa, the manager and mother hen figure, who protects her employees from leering dickheads and fends off the useless boss (James Le Gros) who’s always looking for an excuse to fire her. This low-budget celebration of sisterhood received something of a boost in the US when Barack Obama named it as one of his favourite movies of 2018.
